Gap Return Policy: Returns, Refunds, Exchanges & Exceptions

Ethan Parker By Ethan Parker · Updated: October 8, 2026

Gap generally allows eligible U.S. purchases to be returned or exchanged within 30 days. For online orders, the 30-day period starts on the delivery date; for purchases made at a Gap store, it starts on the purchase date.

Returned merchandise generally must be in its original condition, meaning unwashed and unworn. Important exceptions apply to final-sale merchandise, Gap Beauty products, swimwear, sunglasses, masks, maternity merchandise, mail-only items, third-party seller products, and purchases made through external marketplaces.

This guide covers the current U.S. Gap return policy, including online and store returns, refunds, exchanges, return shipping, gifts, Encore membership benefits, and holiday extensions.

Understanding the Gap Return Policy

Gap Return Policy

The standard Gap return window is 30 days.

For an eligible Gap.com purchase, the deadline is calculated from the delivery date. For an eligible item purchased at a Gap store, the deadline is calculated from the date of purchase.

The item should generally remain in its original condition and be unwashed and unworn. Merchandise that does not meet these conditions may not be accepted.

There are several important limitations. A Gap item cannot simply be returned to another Gap Inc. brand. For example, Gap merchandise cannot be returned to Old Navy, Athleta, Banana Republic, Gap Factory, or Banana Republic Factory.

The purchase channel also matters. Online purchases have more return options than store purchases, while third-party seller and external-marketplace purchases follow separate procedures.

Return Windows by Product Category

Most eligible merchandise follows Gap’s standard 30-day period, but certain products have additional conditions or return-channel restrictions.

Product CategoryReturn RuleImportant Conditions
Most Eligible Gap Items30 daysGenerally must be unwashed and unworn
Final Sale ItemsNot returnableNo returns or exchanges
Gap BeautyStandard eligibility subject to policyReturn in store only; opened or used items cannot be returned
SwimwearStandard eligibility subject to policyOriginal price tags and hygienic liner must remain intact; mail return required
New Sunglasses30 days from deliveryOriginal receipt and attached tags required
Defective SunglassesMay be returned at any timeDefect rule applies
MasksNot returnableFinal sale

Mail-Only ItemsStandard eligibility subject to policyMust be returned by mail
Damaged or Defective Gap ItemsMay be returned or exchanged at any timeSeparate from ordinary change-of-mind returns
Encore Market ItemsNot returnableFinal sale; no refund or exchange

These restrictions are specifically identified in Gap’s current return-policy information.

Gap Beauty

Gap Beauty products have a stricter rule than ordinary clothing. They can only be returned in a store, and Gap does not accept opened or used Gap Beauty merchandise for return or exchange.

Swimwear

Eligible swimwear must retain its original price tags and hygienic liner. Gap currently directs these returns through the mail rather than an ordinary store return.

Sunglasses

New sunglasses may be returned within 30 days of delivery when the original receipt accompanies the return and the tags remain attached. Gap separately states that defective sunglasses can be returned at any time.

Maternity Merchandise

Gap maternity merchandise is designated for mail returns only.

What Condition Must Returned Items Be In?

For a standard Gap return or exchange, merchandise should be in its original condition, unwashed and unworn. Items that do not meet these requirements are not accepted under the ordinary return policy.

Some products have additional requirements. Swimwear needs its original price tags and intact hygienic liner. New sunglasses need attached tags and the original receipt. Gap Beauty products cannot be returned after they have been opened or used.

Because conditions vary by product type, do not assume that an item qualifies simply because it is still within 30 days.

Can You Return Opened or Used Items?

Gap’s general policy requires merchandise to remain in original condition and be unwashed and unworn. That means ordinary used or worn merchandise does not qualify for a standard return merely because the return deadline has not expired.

Gap Beauty has an explicit restriction: opened or used Gap Beauty products cannot be returned or exchanged.

Damaged or defective merchandise is different. Gap states that damaged or defective items may be returned or exchanged at any time, so a genuine defect should not be treated as an ordinary used-item return.

Exceptions and Non-Returnable Items

Several types of purchases either cannot be returned at all or follow special rules.

Final Sale merchandise cannot be returned or exchanged by mail or at a store. Masks are final sale and therefore cannot be returned or exchanged. Merchandise purchased through the Encore Market is also final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged, or refunded.

Other merchandise is not necessarily non-returnable but has special conditions. These include Gap Beauty products, swimwear, sunglasses, maternity merchandise, and items specifically designated as mail-only.

The distinction matters: a mail-only item is not automatically final sale. It simply has to be returned using the required channel.

How to Return an Item to Gap

How you should return a Gap item depends primarily on where it was purchased.

For eligible online purchases, Gap supports free returns using its designated return methods. An online return can generally be initiated through Gap’s interactive return process. Eligible customers may be offered a prepaid shipping label or an eligible third-party drop-off option.

Returning an Online Purchase in Store

Most eligible Gap.com merchandise can be returned to a Gap store.

However, store returns are not available for:

  • Items marked return by mail only
  • Items sold by third-party sellers
  • Orders placed through external marketplaces such as TikTok Shop or DoorDash
  • Orders placed on Shopify

These purchases need to follow their applicable return channel instead.

Gap merchandise must also be returned to the correct brand. A Gap purchase cannot be taken to Old Navy, Athleta, Banana Republic, Gap Factory, or another Gap Inc. brand for processing.

Returning an Online Purchase by Mail

For an eligible mail return, start Gap’s interactive return process and identify the items being returned. The system can generate a prepaid return label.

Package the merchandise securely, include the packing slip generated through the return process, and attach the appropriate shipping label. Keeping the carrier tracking number is useful until the return and refund are completed.

Gap states that eligible online returns using its prepaid return method are free. If you choose not to use Gap’s prepaid label and instead arrange your own shipment, the shipping cost is your responsibility.

Using a Package-Free Drop-Off

Eligible online returns may qualify for a Happy Returns drop-off.

When available for the item and location, you can select Happy Returns during the online return process, receive a QR code in the return confirmation email, and take the merchandise to a participating Happy Returns Bar without printing a shipping label or packaging the item yourself. Eligibility depends on the item and location.

Returning an In-Store Purchase

Items purchased at a physical Gap store must be returned through a store; store purchases cannot be returned by mail.

For an eligible store return, Gap says customers can bring the merchandise along with a receipt, Rewards phone number, or the credit card used for the purchase.

What Do You Need to Make a Return?

For a standard refund, Gap identifies several forms of purchase verification.

For an online purchase, the shipping confirmation email can serve as proof. For a store purchase, the store receipt or original credit card used for the purchase may be used.

For in-store purchases, Gap’s return instructions also identify a Rewards phone number as one way to locate the transaction when making an eligible return in a store.

Certain categories require additional documentation. New sunglasses, for example, require the original receipt as well as attached tags.

Can You Return an Item Without a Receipt?

Gap’s standard refund policy states that refunds require proof of purchase, such as a shipping confirmation email for online purchases, a store receipt, or the original credit card used for the purchase.

For store purchases, Gap also tells customers they can bring the Rewards phone number associated with the transaction or the credit card used for the purchase, which may provide alternatives when a paper receipt is unavailable.

Gift returns have separate rules. A gift returned without a gift receipt or invoice may receive a merchandise certificate based on the current selling price rather than a refund of the original purchase price.

Online vs. In-Store Returns

The most important difference is the available return channel.

Purchase TypeStore ReturnMail ReturnReturn Window Begins
Eligible Gap.com PurchaseGenerally yesYesDelivery date
Gap Store PurchaseYesNoPurchase date
Mail-Only Online ItemNoYesDelivery date
Third-Party Seller ItemNoReturn to seller by mail if eligibleSeller/applicable policy
External Marketplace PurchaseNoThrough marketplace processMarketplace policy

Most eligible online purchases can be returned to Gap stores, but Gap excludes mail-only products, third-party seller merchandise, external-marketplace purchases, and Shopify orders from ordinary in-store online returns.

Third-Party Seller and Marketplace Returns

Products sold and shipped by a third-party seller require special handling.

Eligible third-party seller merchandise cannot be returned to Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, or Athleta stores. If the item is eligible and is not final sale, Gap directs customers to initiate the process online and return the item by mail to the seller.

For a damaged third-party item sold through Gap, Gap instructs customers to contact its customer service center to file a damage claim. Gap’s current online return instructions state that a damage claim for these third-party items must be filed within 48 hours of delivery.

Purchases made through an external marketplace, such as TikTok Shop or DoorDash, are different again. They must be returned through the marketplace where the order was originally placed. The marketplace determines its own eligibility rules, deadlines, and procedures.

Return Shipping Fees and Other Charges

Eligible Gap online returns are free when customers use Gap’s supported prepaid return process. Eligible online exchanges are also free.

Gap’s mail-return instructions clarify an important exception: if you decide not to use the provided prepaid return label and arrange your own shipment, you are responsible for the postage.

This is why “free returns” should not be interpreted as Gap paying for every possible return-shipping method a customer independently chooses.

Are Original Shipping Charges Refunded?

Return shipping and the original delivery charge are separate issues.

Gap states that it does not refund original shipping and handling charges when an online order is returned.

Therefore, an eligible return may have free return shipping while the delivery charge originally paid on the order remains nonrefundable.

Refund Methods and Processing Times

Most Gap refunds are issued to the original form of payment.

Original PaymentRefund Treatment
Credit CardRefunded to the same card
Gift CardRefunded to a new gift card
Rewards PointsDollar value converted back to points
PayPalProcessed through payment partner to original payment method
Apple PayProcessed through payment partner to original payment method
Google PayProcessed through payment partner to original payment method
KlarnaProcessed through payment partner to original payment method
AfterpayProcessed through payment partner to original payment method

Gap states that taxes originally paid on returned merchandise are included in the refund. If a refund goes back to a credit card, the card issuer may take up to 10 additional business days to post it after Gap processes the refund.

For purchases paid partly with a gift card and partly with a credit card, Gap credits the refund to a gift card first and then to the credit card.

Rewards-point returns are handled differently. The dollar value attributable to the points is converted back into points and generally credited to the Encore Membership Program account within 1–2 days.

Does Gap Offer Exchanges?

Yes. Gap allows exchanges for eligible merchandise within the applicable return period.

Gap explains that an exchange is handled as two transactions: the original merchandise is returned, and a separate purchase transaction completes the replacement.

For an online exchange initiated through Gap’s portal, the original merchandise must be returned within 14 days to avoid being charged for it.

If an item was purchased using a promotional code or discount, Gap states that an exchange for the same style in a different size or color can preserve the applicable treatment. If the customer changes to a different style, the discount does not transfer.

Final-sale merchandise cannot be exchanged.

Damaged, Defective, or Incorrect Items

Gap distinguishes defective merchandise from ordinary returns.

Its current policy states that damaged or defective Gap items may be returned or exchanged at any time.

Third-party seller merchandise has a different procedure. If a third-party item sold through Gap arrives damaged, Gap instructs the customer to contact customer service and file a damage claim within 48 hours of delivery.

Do not apply the standard Gap damaged-item rule automatically to external marketplace purchases. Purchases made through platforms such as TikTok Shop or DoorDash are governed by the marketplace’s return process and eligibility rules.

Gift Returns and Gift Card Purchases

Gap accepts eligible gift returns.

For an online gift, the return process requires the order number from the shipping invoice or confirmation email and an email address to which the refund information can be sent.

A gift returned with a gift receipt or invoice receives a gift card for the purchase price. A gift returned without a gift receipt or invoice receives a merchandise certificate based on the item’s current selling price.

If the original purchase was paid with a gift card and is otherwise eligible for a refund, Gap issues the refund to a new gift card.

Sale, Clearance, and Final Sale Returns

A discounted price alone should not be confused with a final-sale designation.

The critical restriction applies to merchandise specifically marked Final Sale. Gap states that final-sale products cannot be returned or exchanged either by mail or at a store.

Check the item’s designation at purchase rather than assuming every discounted product is non-returnable.

Gap Holiday Return Policy

Gap currently provides an extended holiday return period for qualifying purchases made October 15 through December 24.

Those purchases may be returned through January 15 of the following year, or within the normal 30-day period measured from delivery for online purchases or purchase date for store purchases, whichever is later. Proof of purchase is required.

Items shipped and sold by third-party sellers are excluded from Gap’s extended holiday return policy and follow their applicable seller return rules.

This means an eligible purchase made between October 15 and December 24, 2026 can fall under the holiday extension through January 15, 2027, unless its ordinary 30-day deadline is later.

Encore Membership Return Benefits

Gap’s Encore Membership Program can provide qualifying customers with additional time beyond the normal 30-day period.

Premier Members

Qualifying Premier Members who were signed into their account when purchasing online or provided their phone number during an in-store purchase may return merchandise for up to 45 days after purchase or delivery.

When the return occurs after the standard 30-day period, Gap issues a Merchandise Return Card rather than the standard original-payment refund.

All-Access Cardmembers

Qualifying All-Access Cardmembers who were signed in online or provided their phone number for an in-store purchase may have up to 60 days after purchase or delivery.

Returns made after the standard 30-day period are issued on a Merchandise Return Card.

These extensions do not turn otherwise ineligible merchandise into returnable merchandise. Final-sale and other product restrictions continue to matter.

What Happens If the Return Window Has Passed?

For ordinary customers, Gap’s standard return period is 30 days. The current policy does not establish a general late-return entitlement for standard merchandise after that period.

Qualifying Premier and All-Access customers may have the extended merchandise-credit periods described above.

A genuinely damaged or defective Gap item is different because Gap states that damaged or defective merchandise may be returned or exchanged at any time.

Do not rely on an assumed manager exception for an ordinary late return.

How to Track Your Return and Refund

For a mailed return, keep the carrier tracking number until Gap confirms that the return has been completed. Gap specifically recommends recording the delivery tracking number when preparing a mail return.

Gap sends an email after the return or exchange has been completed. Credit-card refunds can then take additional time to appear, with the card issuer potentially requiring up to 10 additional business days to post the credit.

For eligible Happy Returns transactions, keep the drop-off confirmation associated with the return until the refund is complete.

Common Reasons a Return May Be Denied

A Gap return may not qualify when the merchandise falls outside the applicable policy. Common policy-based reasons include:

  • The standard 30-day deadline has passed and no applicable extension applies.
  • The item is marked Final Sale.
  • Clothing has been worn or washed instead of remaining in original condition.
  • A Gap Beauty product has been opened or used.
  • Swimwear no longer has its required tags or intact hygienic liner.
  • A new pair of sunglasses lacks required tags or the original receipt.
  • The customer attempts to return a mail-only product to a store.
  • The item was purchased from a third-party seller or external marketplace and is being returned through the wrong channel.
  • The customer attempts to return Gap merchandise to a different Gap Inc. brand.

These limitations come from Gap’s current eligibility, product, and return-channel requirements.

What to Do If Your Return Is Denied

First, identify the specific reason the item was rejected. Check whether the problem concerns the deadline, merchandise condition, proof of purchase, final-sale status, product category, or return method.

For an online purchase, confirm whether the item is marked return by mail only or was sold by a third-party seller. For a marketplace purchase, use the marketplace’s own return process instead of attempting a standard Gap return.

If you believe the merchandise is genuinely damaged or defective, explain that issue clearly rather than presenting it as an ordinary change-of-mind return.

Use Gap Customer Care when the published process does not resolve an eligible return issue.

How to Contact Gap About a Return

Gap’s online return instructions list 800-427-7895 for customer service from inside the United States and 614-744-3907 from outside the United States in connection with third-party-item damage claims.

For ordinary returns, customers can also use Gap’s online return process or seek assistance through Gap Customer Care.

Tips for a Smoother Return

Return ordinary merchandise well before the 30-day deadline rather than waiting until the final day. For clothing, avoid washing or wearing the item if you may need to return it.

Keep the receipt, shipping confirmation, order information, and original payment card until you are certain you will keep the purchase. Preserve tags and hygienic liners on products such as swimwear, and check whether an online product is designated mail-only before taking it to a store.

For mailed returns, save the carrier tracking information until the refund appears. If the merchandise came from a third-party seller or external marketplace, confirm the seller and purchase channel before starting the return.
