IKEA Return Policy: Return Windows, Refunds, Exceptions, and Fees

Ethan Parker By Ethan Parker · Updated: October 5, 2026

The IKEA return policy in the United States gives customers 365 days to return new and unopened products and 180 days to return opened products, provided the purchase meets IKEA’s eligibility requirements and you have proof of purchase. Opened or assembled furniture can qualify; the original packaging is not required. However, products that are dirty, stained, damaged, or modified may be refused, and plants, cut fabric, custom countertops, and As-Is products are excluded from the standard return policy. Mattresses follow a separate one-time 90-day exchange policy rather than the standard return rules. This guide covers IKEA U.S. purchases, including store and online returns, proof-of-purchase requirements, shipping costs, refunds, damaged items, mattress exchanges, and important exceptions.

Understanding the IKEA Return Policy

IKEA Return Policy

For IKEA purchases in the United States, the main distinction is whether the product is unopened or has been opened.

New and unopened products can be returned within 365 days, while opened products can be returned within 180 days. Proof of purchase is required under the standard return policy. Eligible returns receive a full refund based on the net purchase price shown on the receipt.

Opening the box does not automatically make an IKEA product non-returnable. IKEA also states that a product may be returned after it has been assembled, and the original packaging is not required. The important issue is whether the merchandise remains eligible under the policy and is in a condition IKEA can accept.

The standard U.S. policy applies to qualifying IKEA U.S. purchases. IKEA’s main U.S. return guidance states that products purchased through IKEA U.S. stores, remote shopping, or the IKEA U.S. website fall within the U.S. return system.

Mattresses90 daysOne mattress exchange; mattress cannot be dirty, marked, or damaged

Cut fabricNot returnableExcluded from standard returns
Custom countertopsNot returnableExcluded from standard returns

Mattresses

Mattresses have a separate Love it or exchange it policy. A qualifying new mattress may be exchanged once within 90 days if it is not dirty, marked, or damaged. This is an exchange program rather than the standard 365-day return policy.

If the replacement mattress costs more, you pay the difference. If it costs less, IKEA credits the difference to an IKEA Refund Card. IKEA also states that mattress purchases processed through this exchange program are credited through an IKEA Refund Card.

The mattress exchange program does not apply to bed bases, bed slats, or mattress toppers. If the original mattress was delivered through IKEA Home Delivery, IKEA states that collection and delivery of the replacement mattress are free when the exchange is arranged through Customer Service.

As-Is Products

IKEA As-Is products are excluded from the normal return policy, including qualifying products reserved through the As-Is online service. IKEA describes these purchases as final sale. Some eligible used IKEA furniture may instead qualify for the separate Buy Back & Resell program, but that is not the same as obtaining a normal return refund.

What Condition Must Returned Items Be In?

IKEA assesses returned merchandise before issuing a refund. Opened or assembled merchandise can qualify, but IKEA may refuse merchandise that is:

  • Dirty
  • Stained
  • Damaged
  • Modified from its original form
  • Otherwise unsuitable for acceptance under the return policy

Modifications can include changes such as drilling holes, painting the item, or removing parts. IKEA specifically warns that modifications may also affect warranty coverage because the product is no longer in its original form or functioning as designed.

You do not generally need to preserve the original packaging merely because the product has been opened or assembled. The condition of the merchandise itself is more important.

Can You Return Opened or Used Items?

Yes. IKEA’s U.S. policy allows opened products to be returned within 180 days with proof of purchase, subject to the product’s condition and the policy exclusions. IKEA also states that customers can test qualifying products at home during this period as long as the merchandise remains within an acceptable level of use and is still saleable.

Opened does not mean unlimited use. A product that becomes dirty, stained, damaged, or altered can be refused.

Mattresses are the major exception. They are handled under the separate one-time 90-day mattress exchange program rather than the general 180-day opened-product return rule.

Exceptions and Non-Returnable Items

IKEA’s main U.S. return policy excludes the following from standard returns:

  • Plants
  • Cut fabric
  • Custom countertops
  • As-Is products

IKEA also states that it cannot refund or exchange merchandise that is modified from its original form or found to be dirty, stained, or damaged.

As-Is merchandise deserves particular attention because these purchases are specifically treated as final sale under the standard return policy.

Purchased IKEA gift cards are another special case. IKEA states that the amount loaded onto a gift card cannot be refunded, and gift cards cannot be cancelled or exchanged for cash.

How to Return an Item to IKEA

The easiest method for many customers is returning the product to an IKEA store. Online and store purchases can generally be brought to an IKEA store in the same country, subject to the standard eligibility requirements.

Returning an Item In Store

For a regular store return:

  1. Bring the eligible product to an IKEA store.
  2. Go to the Exchanges & Returns area.
  3. Bring your receipt or other qualifying proof of purchase.
  4. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
  5. Keep the payment card used for the purchase available when applicable.
  6. IKEA will assess the merchandise and process the eligible refund.

Returns are not accepted at IKEA Planning Studio or IKEA Pick Up Point locations.

Using IKEA Express Returns

IKEA also offers an Express return process for eligible in-store returns. You enter your receipt or order information, identify the products being returned, provide the requested details, and receive a return barcode by SMS and email.

After creating an Express return, IKEA instructs customers to bring the barcode and merchandise to an IKEA store within 14 days. The 14-day period is the timeframe for using the prepared Express return barcode; it does not replace the underlying 365-day or 180-day product return window.

Returning an Online Order In Store

Online IKEA U.S. purchases can generally be returned to an IKEA store. Go to the Exchanges & Returns area with the merchandise and appropriate order confirmation or proof of purchase.

Returning Smaller Items by Parcel Carrier

If you cannot visit a store, IKEA provides parcel-return options for qualifying smaller items. IKEA’s current support information directs customers to contact Customer Support to arrange smaller-item returns through FedEx drop-off locations. IKEA notes that the customer may be responsible for the return shipping cost.

IKEA’s delivery terms make the broader cost rule clear: return shipping is the buyer’s responsibility unless the product was missing pieces or damaged before delivery to the customer.

Returning Large Items

Large items can be returned to an IKEA store. If a delivered item needs to be collected, contact IKEA Customer Support about pickup availability. Home pickup and removal options vary by market, so customers should not assume pickup is available everywhere or free for an ordinary change-of-mind return.

What Do You Need to Make a Return?

For a standard IKEA U.S. return, bring:

  • The merchandise being returned
  • Your receipt or applicable proof of purchase
  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • Your online order confirmation when applicable
  • The payment card used for the purchase when relevant to locating or refunding the transaction

IKEA states that information from the government-issued ID is retained in a company-wide database for return authorization purposes.

If your IKEA Family number was attached to the original transaction, your purchase history may provide the receipt information needed for the return.

Can You Return an Item Without a Receipt?

IKEA’s standard policy requires proof of purchase, but losing the paper receipt does not necessarily end your options.

For an in-store purchase paid by card or digital payment, IKEA may be able to locate the transaction. To search for a missing receipt, IKEA says it may need:

  • Store location
  • Purchase date
  • Exact transaction amount
  • Last four digits of the card used

Digital-wallet payments can use card numbers different from the last four digits printed on your physical card, so check the payment details in your banking or wallet records if necessary.

If your IKEA Family membership was used for the purchase, receipt information may also appear in your IKEA Family purchase history.

A successful transaction lookup effectively restores the proof IKEA needs; customers should not assume IKEA offers an unrestricted receiptless-return policy.

Online vs. In-Store Returns

Both qualifying IKEA U.S. online purchases and purchases made at physical IKEA U.S. stores can generally be returned at an IKEA store.

The main practical difference is cost and convenience. Store returns are free, while customers returning ordinary change-of-mind purchases through a shipping method may be responsible for the shipping cost.

Large delivered products may require assistance from Customer Support if you need home pickup. Availability of pickup services varies by market.

IKEA Planning Studios and IKEA Pick Up Point locations do not accept returns.

Return Shipping Fees and Other Charges

Returning an eligible item directly to an IKEA store is free.

For mailed or shipped change-of-mind returns, the buyer is generally responsible for return shipping. IKEA makes an exception when a product is missing pieces or was damaged before delivery to the customer.

Large-item home pickup is not governed by one universal nationwide fee in IKEA’s published return guidance. Pickup availability varies by market, so the applicable option and cost should be confirmed with Customer Support for the specific order.

Are Original Shipping Charges Refunded?

No for ordinary returns. IKEA’s U.S. delivery terms state that shipping fees are not refunded for returns. This is separate from the cost of sending the merchandise back: you may lose the original shipping charge and also be responsible for return shipping when making a standard change-of-mind shipped return.

Different remedies can apply when IKEA is resolving a product that arrived damaged, incomplete, or incorrect, so those situations should be reported as order problems rather than treated automatically as ordinary change-of-mind returns.

Refund Methods and Processing Times

For an eligible standard return with the required proof of purchase, IKEA generally refunds the purchase to the original form of payment. IKEA also provides Refund Cards in certain situations or when a customer chooses one as an alternative where offered.

Refund SituationExpected ProcessingImportant Notes
Standard eligible refundTypically 5–7 business daysRefund generally processes to the original payment method
Small item shipped backReimbursement may take approximately 2 weeks after arrival at the storeShipping/transit time occurs before IKEA receives the return
Mattress exchangeExchange/refund-card rules applyNot handled as a standard mattress refund

A return sent by carrier therefore has multiple stages: the package must first reach IKEA, then the return must be processed, and the financial institution may have its own posting process. Do not count only the time the package spends in transit when estimating when the money will appear.

Only the net purchase price shown on the receipt is refunded under IKEA’s standard return guidance. If a promotional item from the original transaction is not returned, IKEA states that the value of that promotional item may be deducted from the refund.

Does IKEA Offer Exchanges?

For ordinary merchandise, IKEA’s current guidance says that if you want a different item, you generally return the original product and make a new purchase.

Mattresses are the notable exception: qualifying mattresses have a specific one-time exchange program within 90 days.

When making an in-store exchange where applicable, IKEA instructs customers to bring the merchandise, photo ID, receipt or online order confirmation, and the card used for the original purchase.

Damaged, Defective, Incorrect, or Incomplete Items

Do not treat an item that arrived damaged, incorrect, or incomplete exactly like a normal change-of-mind return.

If only one part is damaged or missing, IKEA may be able to provide or ship the replacement part rather than requiring you to return the complete product. IKEA recommends bringing the damaged part or product and your order confirmation or receipt to a store for the quickest resolution. For missing parts, having the assembly instructions can help identify the exact component.

For a delivery with missing or damaged packages, IKEA advises reviewing the delivered order promptly and states that missing or damaged packages should be reported within 48 hours of delivery.

If IKEA delivered the wrong item, Customer Service can help arrange the appropriate correction. Depending on the situation, this may involve replacing the incorrect item, arranging delivery of the missing/correct merchandise, collecting the item delivered in error, or processing an appropriate refund.

For damaged or missing merchandise, IKEA U.S. Customer Support can be reached at 1-888-888-4532.

Gift Cards and Refund Cards

Purchased IKEA gift cards are not ordinary merchandise returns. IKEA states that gift cards cannot be cancelled or exchanged for cash and that the amount loaded onto a gift card is not refundable.

IKEA Refund Cards are different. They may be issued as an alternative form of refund or through programs such as Buy Back & Resell. IKEA states that its Refund Cards have no expiration date and can be used for qualifying IKEA purchases in stores and online.

Keep a Refund Card secure. IKEA warns that lost or stolen cards generally cannot simply be replaced; support may be able to block a card only in certain situations where it can be verified and connected to an active IKEA Family account.

Sale, Clearance, and As-Is Returns

A reduced price alone should not be confused with IKEA’s As-Is designation. IKEA’s published return policy specifically excludes As-Is products, and its As-Is guidance describes those sales as final.

For other merchandise, eligibility should be determined from the normal return policy and any product-specific terms rather than assuming every discounted item is final sale.

IKEA Family Return Benefits

The normal 365-day unopened and 180-day opened return windows do not depend on IKEA Family membership in IKEA’s published standard policy.

Membership can still be useful during a return because purchases made using an IKEA Family number may appear in the member’s purchase history, helping recover proof of purchase.

IKEA Family also provides a separate accidental-damage benefit. If the member’s IKEA Family card was presented when making the purchase, IKEA states that accidental damage during transport or assembly can qualify for assistance when the customer visits an IKEA store within 14 days of purchase with the damaged product, IKEA Family card, and receipt.

That benefit should not be confused with the ordinary return policy for products damaged through normal customer use.

Return Policy vs. Warranty or Buy Back

A return, warranty claim, and IKEA Buy Back transaction serve different purposes.

The return policy covers eligible recent purchases within the applicable 365-day or 180-day period. A warranty can apply to qualifying product defects after the ordinary return period, but the coverage and duration depend on the particular product.

Mattresses, for example, have a one-time 90-day comfort exchange while qualifying IKEA mattresses also carry a separate 10-year limited warranty. The warranty is not an extension of the 90-day comfort exchange.

The Buy Back & Resell program is different again. At participating locations, eligible IKEA Family or IKEA Business Network members can offer qualifying used IKEA furniture back to IKEA for store credit. The merchandise is assessed, and accepted products receive credit through an IKEA Refund Card. This program does not convert an expired standard return into a full purchase-price refund.

What Happens If the Return Window Has Passed?

Once an item is outside its normal return period, IKEA does not promise a standard refund. IKEA states that situations outside the published return policy are handled case by case and require a physical inspection at a local store. That is not a guarantee that an exception will be approved.

Depending on the reason for the problem, a separate manufacturer or IKEA product warranty may be relevant. Eligible used IKEA furniture may also qualify for Buy Back & Resell, but this produces assessed store credit rather than a standard return refund.

How to Track Your Return and Refund

For a shipped return, retain your carrier drop-off receipt and tracking information until the refund has been completed. This helps establish when IKEA received the package.

For store returns, keep the return documentation until the credit appears on your payment method.

IKEA states that refunds typically process to the original payment method within 5–7 business days, while reimbursement for smaller merchandise mailed to a store may be received approximately two weeks after the item arrives at the store.

Common Reasons an IKEA Return May Be Denied

A return may fall outside IKEA’s published policy when:

  • An unopened product is beyond the 365-day standard window.
  • An opened product is beyond the 180-day window.
  • The merchandise is dirty, stained, damaged, or modified.
  • The product is an excluded category such as a plant, cut fabric, custom countertop, or As-Is item.
  • A mattress does not satisfy the separate mattress exchange requirements.
  • Required proof of purchase cannot be established.
  • The customer attempts to make the return at a location that does not accept returns, such as an IKEA Planning Studio or Pick Up Point.

What to Do If Your Return Is Denied

First, ask which specific policy requirement the merchandise failed to meet. Check whether the issue involves the return deadline, item condition, proof of purchase, an excluded product category, or a separate policy such as the mattress exchange program.

If your paper receipt is missing, check your IKEA Family purchase history or ask whether IKEA can locate an eligible card transaction.

For a defective item, determine whether a product warranty applies instead of the normal return policy. For older qualifying furniture, Buy Back & Resell may also be an alternative, although it is not equivalent to a refund.

IKEA states that cases falling outside its standard return policy require physical inspection and are considered case by case, so an exception should never be assumed in advance.

How to Contact IKEA About a Return

For U.S. return problems, damaged merchandise, missing parts, pickup questions, or situations that cannot be resolved in store, IKEA’s official U.S. Customer Support Center number is 1-888-888-4532. IKEA also provides customer-service chat support.

For the fastest handling of a product problem, have your order number or receipt information available before contacting support.

Tips for a Smoother Return

Return the item well before its applicable 365-day, 180-day, or special-category deadline rather than waiting until the last day. Keep your receipt or order confirmation and, if you use IKEA Family, make sure the purchase appears in your account history.

For furniture, keep all parts and components together and avoid painting, drilling, cutting, or otherwise modifying an item you may want to return. Clean merchandise before taking it back, since dirty or stained products can be refused.

For shipped returns, keep your carrier receipt and tracking number until the refund posts. If a delivered order is damaged or incomplete, report the problem promptly rather than processing it automatically as an ordinary change-of-mind return.
