Target Return Policy: Return Window, Refunds, Exceptions, and Fees

Target Return Policy

Target’s return policy generally allows most unopened items sold by Target to be returned in new condition within 90 days for a refund or exchange. For Target.com orders, the return period starts when you receive the item, including delivery, Shipt delivery, or store pickup. Some categories have shorter deadlines, while eligible Target Owned Brand products can have a much longer return period.

This guide covers the current U.S. Target return policy, including standard and category-specific return windows, receipt requirements, Target Plus purchases, opened items, return methods, fees, refunds, exchanges, gifts, and important exceptions. Because individual products can carry modified policies, the return information shown with the specific item should also be checked before starting a return.

Understanding the Target Return Policy

Target Return Policy

For most merchandise sold directly by Target, the basic rule is 90 days. The item generally needs to be unopened and in new condition to qualify for a refund or exchange. Target notes that opened or damaged merchandise, as well as items without appropriate proof of purchase, may be denied.

For Target.com purchases, the 90-day clock does not simply begin when the order is placed. Target says the return period begins once you receive the merchandise, whether that happens through home delivery, delivery by a Shipt shopper, or store pickup.

Individual products can have modified policies shown on the receipt, packing slip, product description, Target.com listing, or Target’s return-policy information. Electronics, Apple products, phones, limited-time collections, and Target Plus purchases are important examples where the general 90-day rule may not apply.

Return Windows by Product Category

The most important part of the Target return policy is identifying which return window applies to your specific purchase.

Product CategoryReturn WindowImportant Conditions
Most Items Sold by Target90 daysGenerally unopened and in new condition
Target Owned Brand ItemsUp to 1 yearReceipt required
Electronics & Entertainment30 daysExcludes Apple and Beats products
Apple & Beats Products14 daysIncludes Apple and Beats products covered by the exception
Mobile Phones14 daysSpecial phone requirements may apply
Most Target Plus Partner Items30 daysProof of purchase required for in-store returns
Limited Time Offer Designer LaunchesTypically 2 weeksNot covered by the one-year Target Owned Brand rule

Target Owned Brand Items

Target provides a special return period for its owned brands. An eligible Target Owned Brand item can be returned for up to one year with a receipt for a refund or exchange. Target Wallet can serve as the receipt when the qualifying transaction appears in purchase history.

Limited Time Offer designer launches are excluded from this one-year benefit and typically have a much shorter return period.

The extra 30-day return benefit associated with Target Circle Card purchases does not extend the one-year Target Owned Brand return period further.

Electronics and Entertainment

Electronics and entertainment products, other than Apple and Beats products, generally need to be returned or exchanged within 30 days rather than the standard 90 days.

Because electronics can have category-specific rules, check the product’s return information before assuming the standard window applies.

Apple and Beats Products

Target currently gives 14 days for returns or exchanges of Apple and Beats products. This category includes Apple and Beats products covered by Target’s listed exception.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones purchased in a Target store or online through Order Pickup generally have a 14-day return or exchange period.

Contract phones can have additional requirements. A phone tied to a carrier contract may be subject to carrier early-termination charges. Target also states that a restocking charge of up to $35 may apply to phones, except where prohibited. There is no restocking charge when the product is unopened.

Certain phone returns must be handled through Target Tech. Target states that applicable cell phone returns should be taken to the cell phone activation counter, and the carrier account holder must be present with valid identification.

What Condition Must Returned Items Be In?

For the standard policy, Target describes eligible merchandise as most unopened items sold by Target in new condition.

Opening an item does not automatically mean every Target return will be rejected, because rules differ by category. However, Target specifically warns that opened or damaged merchandise may be denied a refund or exchange.

For a smoother return, keep the product, accessories, packaging, manuals, and other included components together until you are sure you want to keep the purchase.

Certain categories have explicit opened-item restrictions, so the rules for the specific product matter more than the general return window.

Can You Return Opened or Used Items?

Whether Target accepts an opened item depends on the product.

Some opened products may still qualify under the applicable policy, while certain categories become exchange-only or completely non-returnable once opened.

For example:

  • Opened music, movies, video games, and software are eligible only for exchange under Target’s stated exception, generally for the same title.
  • Opened airbeds are exchange-only for a similar item.
  • Opened or unsealed breast pumps are final sale.
  • Open or defective collectibles listed under Target’s final-sale rules cannot be returned.

Because Target can deny merchandise that is opened or damaged, customers should check the specific item’s return terms rather than assuming that every opened purchase qualifies.

Exceptions and Non-Returnable Items

Target identifies several categories as final sale or otherwise non-returnable. Current examples include:

  • Trading cards and trading card accessories
  • Open or defective collectibles
  • Personalized merchandise
  • Digital downloads
  • Opened or unsealed breast pumps
  • Target GiftCards and certain specialty or prepaid gift cards, except where required by law
  • Select products sold by Target Plus Partners

Holiday and limited-time collections can also have modified return policies, so their individual return deadlines should be checked separately.

Some products purchased through specialized areas, including Target Optical, Pharmacy, Starbucks, Target Tech, and applicable in-store partner areas, may need to be handled through those departments rather than ordinary Guest Services.

How to Return an Item to Target

Target provides several return methods depending on the item and purchase channel. Options can include Guest Services, mail returns for qualifying online orders, and Drive Up returns for eligible items.

Returning an Item In Store

For an item purchased at a Target store, take the product to Guest Services with one of the accepted forms of purchase verification, such as:

  1. A valid receipt.
  2. A return barcode from your Target account or Target app.
  3. The credit or debit card originally used for the transaction when Target can use it to locate the purchase.

The return must still meet the deadline and other conditions applicable to the item.

Returning a Target.com Order In Store

Most eligible Target.com purchases can also be returned to a Target store.

Target accepts several ways to verify an online purchase, including the receipt, Target app barcode, shipping or delivery confirmation email, or original payment method.

Some Target.com merchandise is designated as store-return-only and cannot be sent to Target’s online return center. This can include certain hazardous-material products.

Returning With Drive Up

Eligible products can be returned through Drive Up at locations offering the service.

Start the return through the order details in the Target app. If Drive Up is available for that item, select the option and follow the instructions for notifying the store that you are on the way and have arrived.

The item’s physical barcode is required for a Drive Up return. It can usually be found on the product tag, sticker, box, or original packaging. If that barcode is unavailable, Target recommends attempting the return at Guest Services instead.

Not every product qualifies for Drive Up returns.

Large or Heavy Item Returns

Many large items can still be taken to a Target store. Certain large or heavy products, including some furniture and electronics, may qualify for return pickup.

Target says pickup is not available for every product and is typically used for large items weighing more than 150 pounds. Eligibility can be confirmed through Target.com Guest Services.

What Do You Need to Make a Return?

Depending on how and where the item was purchased, Target can use different forms of proof of purchase.

These may include:

  • Original receipt
  • Digital return barcode
  • Target account purchase history
  • Target app purchase history
  • Delivery or shipping confirmation
  • Packing slip
  • Original payment card for receipt lookup
  • Gift receipt for gift returns

For eligible store purchases, Target may attempt to locate a receipt using a Target Circle Card or qualifying third-party Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover card used for the transaction.

Can You Return an Item Without a Receipt?

Target may accept certain returns without a paper receipt, but receiptless returns are not guaranteed.

Before attempting a no-receipt return, check your Target account or app. Purchases connected to your account can provide a return barcode or digital receipt. Target can also attempt to locate certain purchases at Guest Services using the original payment method.

If Target cannot establish proof of purchase but approves the return, the refund may be issued on a merchandise return card.

Target states that a government-issued ID is required when a merchandise return card is issued for an approved non-receipted return. The merchandise return card is generally limited to eligible purchases at Target stores and is subject to its own conditions.

Target Plus Partner returns are stricter: proof of purchase is required.

Online vs. In-Store Returns

The return deadline and method can differ depending on where an item was purchased and who sold it.

For Target.com merchandise sold directly by Target, the return clock begins when you receive the order. Most eligible Target.com items can be brought to a Target store.

In-store purchases can generally be returned through Guest Services when the item qualifies and sufficient proof of purchase is available.

Online orders may also provide mail-return options, while some products must be returned in store. Always check the return options displayed for the individual order before mailing an item.

Target Plus Partner Returns

Target Plus merchandise follows different rules from products sold directly by Target.

Most unopened Target Plus Partner items in new condition have a 30-day return window. The return period begins when the order is received through delivery, Shipt delivery, or pickup.

Partner items can generally be returned to Target in store or by mail, although individual products can have modified or shorter return periods.

Proof of purchase is required for Target Plus Partner returns in store. Opened or damaged Partner items may be denied.

Target Plus Partner merchandise also cannot be exchanged. Instead, an eligible item must be handled through the applicable return process.

Return Shipping Fees and Other Charges

Target promotes multiple free return options, including qualifying in-store and Drive Up returns, but shipping-related charges depend on the method and reason for the return.

Target does not publish one universal flat return-shipping charge. Whether shipping is included in a refund can depend on why the merchandise is being returned. Reasons involving problems such as an incorrect, damaged, defective, missing-parts, or inaccurately described product can qualify differently from preference-based returns such as ordering the wrong size or simply changing your mind.

Mobile phones are a notable fee exception. A restocking charge of up to $35 may apply to certain phone returns, except where prohibited, while unopened phones are not subject to that restocking charge.

Are Original Shipping Charges Refunded?

Original shipping charges are not automatically refundable in every situation.

Target says shipping charges may be refunded depending on the reason for the return. Shipping may not be refunded when the return was not caused by a Target error or when the Online Return Center declines the return.

This is separate from the price of the merchandise itself, so customers should not assume that receiving an item refund automatically means every original delivery charge will also be refunded.

Refund Methods and Processing Times

Target generally sends an approved refund back to the original form of payment. When multiple payment methods were used, the refund can be divided among those methods.

Refund MethodExpected ProcessingImportant Notes
Target Circle CardUp to 2 days after refund approvalCredited after Target approves refund
Third-Party Credit CardUp to 5 days after approvalCard issuer timing can matter
Online Return CenterAverage 7–10 additional business days after receiptTarget must inspect and process the returned item before approval
Target GiftCard PurchaseNew Target eGiftCardUsed for applicable refunds

These periods should not be confused with shipping transit time. A mailed return must first reach Target’s Online Return Center. The return then has to be inspected and processed before the refund is approved, after which the financial institution may have its own posting process.

For approved non-receipted store returns, Target may instead provide a merchandise return card.

Does Target Offer Exchanges?

Yes. Target offers in-store exchanges on most eligible merchandise within the applicable return-policy window.

If a direct exchange cannot be completed, Target may instead process a return and a new purchase. Promotional pricing, coupons, and payment methods can affect how the replacement transaction is handled.

For Target.com merchandise, Target.com Guest Services can assist with an exchange request. When the replacement is available, Target may process the return and place a new order while honoring the original purchase price under the stated process.

Target Plus Partner products cannot be exchanged.

Damaged, Defective, or Incorrect Items

If an online order arrives damaged, defective, incorrect, missing components, or otherwise differs materially from what was ordered, start the return or problem-resolution process through the order details rather than treating it as an ordinary change-of-mind return.

The reason matters because Target’s shipping-refund rules distinguish qualifying product or fulfillment problems from preference-based returns. Damaged-on-arrival products, wrong items, recalled merchandise, nonworking items, missing parts, and certain other order problems can qualify for shipping-related refund treatment.

Keep the packaging and order information available until the issue has been resolved.

Gift Returns and Gift Card Purchases

An eligible gift can be returned to a Target store with a gift receipt or packing slip. The refund is generally issued as a Target GiftCard.

If there is no gift receipt or packing slip, an approved in-store gift return may instead result in a merchandise return card. Target.com gifts can also be returned by mail with appropriate gift documentation through the applicable process.

Gift cards themselves have different rules. Target lists Target GiftCards and certain specialty or prepaid gift cards among items that cannot be returned or redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law.

Registry and Wish List Returns

Target provides extended rules for qualifying registry gifts.

Baby and Wedding registries can return most qualifying new, unopened items for up to one year after the event date, subject to Target’s registry requirements. Wish List items generally have up to 90 days after purchase for eligible unopened returns.

Registry return eligibility and refund method depend on how the gift is recorded and whether appropriate proof is available.

Target Circle Card and Target Circle 360 Return Benefits

Target Circle Card debit and credit card customers and Target Circle 360 members receive 30 additional days beyond the normal return window on nearly all qualifying purchases.

The extension does not apply universally. Target lists exclusions including Target Optical purchases, final-sale merchandise, contract mobile phones, and certain online SNAP/EBT purchases.

The one-year Target Owned Brand return period also does not receive another 30-day extension.

This means an extended-return benefit should always be applied to the product’s actual qualifying return window rather than assumed for every purchase.

Return Policy vs. Warranty or Protection Plan

A return policy and a product warranty or protection plan solve different problems.

The Target return policy determines whether merchandise can be returned or exchanged during its applicable return period. A manufacturer warranty or separately purchased protection plan may provide support after the normal return period for eligible defects or covered damage.

For products with AppleCare+ or another protection plan, the plan has its own terms and should not be treated as an automatic extension of Target’s standard merchandise return window.

AppleCare+ purchased through Target, for example, has specific return rules that differ depending on whether the plan is returned with the associated Apple product or by itself.

What Happens If the Return Window Has Passed?

Once the applicable return deadline has expired, the standard Target return policy no longer establishes eligibility for that return.

Do not assume the standard 90-day window applies if the item is an electronic product, Apple or Beats product, phone, Target Plus item, limited-time collection, or another product carrying a modified policy.

For a defective item outside its Target return period, check whether a valid manufacturer warranty or separately purchased protection plan applies.

How to Track Your Return and Refund

For mailed returns, retain the shipping or drop-off confirmation until the return and refund are complete.

A mailed return has to arrive at Target’s Online Return Center before inspection and refund processing can occur. Target states that Online Return Center processing averages an additional 7–10 business days after receipt before refund approval.

For Drive Up returns, refund details are provided by email as part of the return process.

Keeping your order number, return confirmation, and carrier tracking information makes it easier to investigate a delayed return.

Common Reasons a Return May Be Denied

A Target return may be denied when it does not meet the applicable policy. Common policy-based issues include:

  • The applicable return period has expired.
  • The product is designated final sale.
  • An opened product belongs to a non-returnable category.
  • The item’s condition does not meet the return requirements.
  • A Target Plus return lacks required proof of purchase.
  • The item was sent through a return method that is not allowed for that product.
  • Target determines that a return, refund, or exchange involves fraud, suspected fraud, or abuse.

Target also warns that an online refund issued before inspection can be reversed if the returned merchandise is later determined to be ineligible.

What to Do If Your Return Is Denied

First, identify the exact reason the return was rejected. Check the product’s return deadline, seller, condition requirements, and any category-specific exception.

If the problem involves missing proof of purchase, check the Target app, Target account, email confirmation, payment card, or packing slip to see whether the purchase can be verified.

For Target Plus products, confirm that you have the required proof of purchase and that the Partner item’s individual return period has not expired.

If the merchandise is defective but outside the Target return window, determine whether manufacturer support or a valid protection plan applies.

How to Contact Target About a Return

For questions about Target.com orders and applicable online returns, Target lists Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.

For issues involving an in-store purchase or locating return information, Target also lists Target Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680.

Specialized purchases, including certain mobile-phone transactions, may need to be handled through the appropriate Target Tech or activation counter rather than ordinary Guest Services.

Tips for a Smoother Target Return

Check the item’s specific return deadline before heading to the store, especially for electronics, Apple products, phones, limited-time merchandise, and Target Plus purchases.

Keep your receipt or make sure the transaction appears in your Target account. For online orders, retain the shipping or delivery confirmation until the return is complete.

Keep original accessories and included components together. If using Drive Up returns, make sure the item’s tag, sticker, packaging, or another physical barcode is available.

For mailed returns, retain carrier tracking and drop-off confirmation until the refund has posted. Finally, distinguish products sold directly by Target from Target Plus Partner merchandise because their return and exchange rules differ.
